How to Care for Your Sun Catcher (So It Lasts Forever)

Good news: sun catchers are not nearly as fragile as they look.

Bad news: people do manage to ruin them, and every single time it’s one of the same three mistakes.

Here’s everything you need to know to keep yours throwing rainbows for years.

The Three Things That Will Damage Your Sun Catcher

1. Harsh Chemicals

No glass cleaner. No household spray. No rubbing alcohol directly on the metal components. The metal findings and wire wrapping I use are coated, but harsh chemicals strip that coating over time and you’ll end up with tarnishing or rust. Dry cloth only, or a tiny bit of mild dish soap if you really need it.

2. Prolonged Outdoor Exposure

My sun catchers are designed for windows — sheltered, indoor display. The occasional warm breeze from an open window is totally fine. But leaving one hanging outside full-time? The elements will get it eventually. Rain, wind, temperature swings — the metal components aren’t built for it.

3. Getting the Metal Wet Repeatedly

The crystals are glass — they can handle moisture. The metal components less so. If you’re cleaning your sun catcher, avoid soaking or running water directly over the metal findings. Wipe them dry immediately if they do get wet.

Regular Care: Simple and Fast

Monthly wipe-down: A soft, dry microfiber cloth and a little breath is all you need. Gently wipe the crystals and let them air dry. Takes about 30 seconds.

Check the hardware: Every few months, take a quick look at the swivel clasp and any jump rings. Make sure nothing is bending out of shape.

Storage

If you’re ever moving or putting your sun catcher away for a season, wrap it loosely in a soft cloth or tissue paper. Don’t cram it into a box where the crystals can rattle against each other — that’s how chips happen. A small jewelry pouch or a padded envelope works great.

About Tarnishing

Some very light tarnishing on metal components over time is normal and expected — it’s the nature of metal. It doesn’t affect how your sun catcher works. If it bothers you, a jewelry polishing cloth will take care of it in seconds.
